Steal Her Style: Lilmoonchildd

Sometimes, we are all about unicorns, rainbows and bunnies. Other times, we are all about bats, stormy clouds and witches. Right now, we’re definitely feeling those darker vibes, so we asked our fave glam goth queen, Lilmoonchildd, to tell us how to perfect a spooky style.

Tell us about your style?

My heart is goth. My identity is goth. I will forever be drawn to a creepy haunted house, which is the foundation of all of my fashion style. From there you can see me dabbling in many different subcultures, often bringing various elements to my looks. I’m inspired by Japanese fashion, Western styles, and classic pinup, just to name a few. You can typically see trendy elements making their way into my looks, but what makes me unique is that they’ve been given the Yasaman makeover. Juxtaposition is my forte – I pair unlikely combinations to provide a creative and interesting new look.

Tell us about your day-to-day life outside of Instagram.

By day I work as a Medical Radiation Technologist at a busy downtown Vancouver hospital. I’m never too far from the camera, except this time I’m the one taking photos of bones, (how goth!). I have the most adorable black pug named Simba who has become so much more than just a pet, he is truly one of my best friends. I think that saying I love animals is an understatement, I am extremely passionate about animal rights, which extends to how I choose to live my life. The world is so precious and at the end of the day I want to positively impact others, many of whom are often pushed aside because they are different. I am a huge advocate for mental health, using my voice to talk about an issue that is far too often ignored. Curious by nature, I adore learning about new cultures and I’ll never shy away from teaching others about my own. I wish I could travel all over the world and immerse myself in new countries, new experiences, new people, new music, new food, new cultures.

Who / what inspires you the most?

Acts of defiance or rebellion rock me to the core. A person who goes against the masses because it conflicts with who they are and what they believe in: that is inspiring. Powerful historical women who kicked some serious ass because there was no way they were going to remain silent. I am also inspired by the humanitarian work of others. Taking the time to help another in a world that is so often focused on personal gain is inspiring, as well as reassuring – there are some of us out there making a positive impact.

What’s your best styling tip?

Never be afraid to push the socially defined boundaries of fashion – in fact, that is how new styles are born. Be brave. Mix and match. Take risks in styling things that you wouldn’t think would work together. Be authentic. If you feel empowered covering yourself up, then cover up. If you feel empowered taking it off, then take it all off.  Fashion is forever changing and if you’re not grounded in who you are then you may find yourself simply following others – always do you boo.

What’s your favourite BlackMilk piece?

Gahhhh, this is a ridiculously hard question so I’ve got two answers. My go-tos are the Red Tartan Toasties because it is always so damn cold in Vancouver, Canada – these have saved me from becoming a popsicle. My favourite piece ever is the Slytherin Scoop Skater Dress. I may have a slight obsession with all things Harry Potter, and as a fellow Slytherin this dress is EVERYTHING.

If you could choose one food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

BREAD!!! So many delicious options to choose from – baguette bread, flat bread, pita bread, chapati bread, Iranian breads…yummm! One of my favourite things ever is biting into a fresh baguette, if you haven’t yet done this then your next stop is to buy a warm baguette. I love bread.

What does the world need more of?

I would say love but that word has been used so much it’s turned into a cliché that doesn’t really mean anything. So I’m going to define what love means to me. Love to me means listening, empathy, caring, open-mindedness, and compassion. The world needs more of all those. Right now fear is running the world, everyone is afraid of anything different. Fear leads to hatred, and hate always leads to violence. But if, instead of fear, we approach others with an open mind, with empathy, with love, and we listen to each other, the world will be a much better place.
