Meet Stefania Ferrario

Melbourne-based Stefania Ferrario is not only fast becoming one of Australia’s fashion icons (even modelling alongside Dita Von Teese herself for the burlesque superstar’s lingerie label), she is also a bit of a disruptor, advocating for diversity and progression in the industry.

We were lucky enough to spend some time with Stefania in her home city of Melbourne back in 2018, shooting her against the backdrop of the city’s landmarks for a BlackMilk Essentials collection. Suffice to say, we had a blast hanging out with such a warm, bright personality, and became officially obsessed with Stefania’s incredible style. Now, in 2020, we’ve teamed up to bring you an epic swimwear collab – check out the Stefania X BlackMilk collection!

How did you get into the modelling industry?

I decided to really go for modelling when I was 16. I started off by paying a photographer for a set of photos. From there I built up a vast portfolio. It took me years to actually break into the industry however – my size and ‘alternative’ look really held me back. I’m glad I never gave up! It wasn’t until I was 19 that I was finally agency represented and when I was 20 I started getting my first big gigs.

What was it like to model alongside Dita Von Teese?

A complete dream, she is even more ethereal in real life. She has been nothing but supportive and kind to me, and is a huge supporter of my work. She loves to bring her own jewellery to the shoots and has adorned me in some of her personal pieces, I think it really adds something special to the final shots.

What’s your favourite thing about your profession?

I don’t know if I could pick a single favourite thing, but one of them would be the fact that every shoot is so different and I never know what to expect when I arrive on set, it really makes my job fun and exciting.

What do you love about living in Melbourne?

Melbourne is such a welcoming city, and I feel like I can be myself here more than anywhere else I’ve been in the world.

How was it working with the BlackMilk crew?

So much fun! What I loved especially is they were ready to listen and I had creative input, I got to bring along my own accessories, and be super playful with the poses.

What is your go-to item of clothing?

My go to item of clothing would be a pair of legging with pockets! Ever since my first pair of pocket leggings I can’t seem to go without added pockets now!

What’s on your Spotify?

Endless 80s tracks and a whole heap of French songs, notably Gainsbourg.

What’s your number one Melbourne hangout?

Hmm, that’s a tough one, probably High Street Northcote at the moment, lots of groovy cafes and restaurants. But I have also been going to Bridge Road Richmond to some of their pubs too!

What inspires you the most?

When I see people living outside of the norm somewhat. I think one of the hardest things to do in our society is be true to yourself, even if that doesn’t fit into the social norms.

What’s on your perfect pizza?

Lots of vegetables and I don’t mind pineapple, haha!
