Bonnie here. For those of you playing along at home, I’m the in-house photographer here at Black Milk Clothing.
Today I’m going to tell you all about our photo shoot for our next collection - "The Jungle Look". It’s gonna be live on your screens super soon, which means it’s time to get excited!
This shoot was heaps of fun, even though it was considered to be a small shoot by our usual standards! In fact, small shoots have their own advantages. Because it was a bit more scaled back, we didn’t have to freak out about time quite as much. That meant we could spend the whole 2 days creating a whole lot of super fun, jungle-themed content with two of our fav models - Joss & Samie!
Too keep everything simple, we decided to bring the jungle to BMHQ for this shoot and built our backdrop by hand on a wall in the office. Charli and Matt slaved away for 8 hours to put it together for us and the crew here at BM went crazy taking selflies on our jungle wall before the models arrived.
The build itself was pretty intense – even on a small shoot, we just had to go big! Check out our time-lapse vid of the constructing, featuring cute dancing Samie :P
We spent the next few hours shooting our 2 hero images for the awesome Snake Skin Rainbow Dress and Tiger Catsuit. We got the girls bronzed up and super glam for their adventure in the jungle.
As if the giant jungle wall wasn’t enough, we also invited along two jungle residents for the day – a Jungle Python and a Macaw.
While all the staff at BMHQ were thrilled by our visitors, our models weren’t quite as excited… Joss is afraid of snakes and Samie is afraid of birds! Whoops, sorry ladies. But both girls pulled through amazingly on the day, getting up close and personal with their new er, friends to help us create our epic hero shots.
We kept the lighting deep and dramatic for these shots to give depth to the jungle, and then added a pop of colour through the flowers in post-production to really bring the scene to life.
For the photo geeks out there here is a little info on how we setup and shot this scene :)
Focal Length: 85mm
Shooting in our own office space meant we could kinda do whatever we wanted…like another time lapse vid of trying to get those two hero pics! You know what they say about working with animals…..It was definitely a challenge to get "the shot" and you can see how many people were involved in making sure everything was absolutely perfect! A big thank you goes out to the amazing animal handlers who spent the day with us to make sure everything went smoothly and our animal friends stayed happy.
That day we also spent a little time shooting street style content over at our fav location: Alfred & Constance.
As Maddie was away in LA we brought in logistics guru Chi to help us with the shoot…she's an awesome lady with mad organizational skills and was a great addition to the team!
Charli styled up our ladies…
My assistant Paul and I were, of course, busy taking photos…..of ourselves!
Okaaaay maybe I took a few photos of the models too…see, proof!
We even had a shoot team uniform on the day, which is something new we’re trying…I think it works!
Once we had our location and hero shots down, that was a wrap for Day 1.The next day we headed over to Black Smith Studios to shoot every single product for the website.
Things got a little crowded on set as we brought in the big guns in terms of lighting to trial shooting product videos…get excited for this!
It’s gonna be super cool – the idea is you’ll be able to check out little vids of products on the website so you can see them in action. Keep your eyes peeled for 'em on our website!
Shooting all the products made for a very full-on day – it was go go go from start to finish! Some of us went a little crazy...
But we hustled and got through it all. I loved this little shoot and as usual…can't wait till the next one! (No, seriously, the next one is Halloween and it’s going to be HUGE!!)
So what now? The Jungle Look has been shot and now we’re almost ready to go live…I guess we’ll see you on release day ;)
